What to do after a car accident
Being in a car accident can be a stressful situation. If you’re ever involved in one, the first thing you should do is to remain calm and ensure everyone, including yourself is safe. Call 000 if the police, ambulance or fire services are needed.
You should then collect the other party’s details, including:
- The other driver’s name
- The other driver’s address
- The other vehicle’s registration details (take a photo of the licence plate if you can)
It’s important to remember to take these details down from the other party as it’ll help the police if they need to investigate, help you claim on your car insurance, or if you need to make a claim with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) if you’ve been injured.
No Win - No Fee*
We are the original No Win, No Fee* lawyers. This means that if you don’t win you don’t pay Slater and Gordon’s fees (the fees that we charge for the work we do on your case).

Your entitlements
Even if you were at fault for the accident, you may be entitled to:
Medical expenses and commercial care
Weekly payments for loss of income
Other expenses such as rehabilitation equipment
If you’re no longer able to work because of your injury you may also be entitled to additional disability benefits through the insurance policies included in your superannuation
If you’ve suffered a major injury, you may be entitled to treatment and care for life, and weekly payments for up to five years.
What’s the TAC?
Every registered vehicle in Australia pays for third party insurance as part of their vehicle registration, to make sure that compensation is available to those that have unfortunately been hurt on our roads. This provides a financial safety net for the injured, so they can focus on their recovery.
In Victoria, our insurance scheme is run by the TAC.
