What to do after a car accident
Being in a car accident can be a stressful situation. If you’re ever involved in one, the first thing you should do is to remain calm and ensure everyone, including yourself is safe. Call 000 if the police, ambulance or fire services are needed.
You should then collect the other party’s details, including:
- The other driver’s name
- The other driver’s address
- The other vehicle’s registration details (take a photo of the licence plate if you can)
These details will come in handy if you need to claim on your car insurance, if the police need to investigate, or if you need to make a claim with the compulsory third party (CTP) insurer for your road injuries.
No Win - No Fee*
We are the original No Win, No Fee* lawyers. This means that if you don’t win you don’t pay Slater and Gordon’s fees (the fees that we charge for the work we do on your case).

Your entitlements
Even if you were at fault for the accident, you may be entitled to:
Medical expenses and commercial care
Weekly payments for loss of income
Other expenses such as rehabilitation equipment
If you’re no longer able to work because of your injury you may also be entitled to additional disability benefits through the insurance policies included in your superannuation
If you’ve suffered a major injury, you may be entitled to treatment and care for life, and weekly payments for up to five years.
What’s CTP Insurance?
In New South Wales, all vehicles are required to get CTP insurance. The purpose of CTP insurance is to provide people who’ve been injured in a road accident, which includes car accidents, motorcycle accidents, injuries on public transport and even cyclists and pedestrians, compensation so they can seek the medical treatments required for their recovery, and help cover lost wages if they’re not able to work.
