What to do after a car accident

If you’re involved in a car accident, the first thing you should do is to remain calm and ensure everyone, including yourself is safe. Call 000 if the police, ambulance or fire services are needed.

You should then collect the other party’s details, including:

  • The other driver’s name
  • The other driver’s address
  • The other vehicle’s registration details (take a photo of the licence plate if you can)

These details will come in handy if you need to claim on your car insurance, if the police need to investigate, or if you need to make a claim with the compulsory third party (CTP) insurer for your road injuries.

No Win - No Fee*

We are the original No Win, No Fee* lawyers. This means that if you don’t win you don’t pay Slater and Gordon’s fees (the fees that we charge for the work we do on your case).

Your entitlements

If you’ve been injured in a car accident, you may be entitled to compensation under your CTP insurance policy, including claims for the following:

  • Medical expenses and commercial care

  • Loss of income

  • Lump sum impairment benefits

  • Other expenses such as rehabilitation equipment

  • If you’re no longer able to work because of your injury you may also be entitled to additional disability benefits through the insurance policies included in your superannuation.

Making it easier for you

Thank you for your feedback.
