What to do after a car accident
Being in a car accident can be a stressful situation. If you’re ever involved in one, the first thing you should do is to remain calm and ensure everyone, including yourself is safe. Call 000 if the police, ambulance or fire services are needed.
You should then collect the other party’s details, including:
- The other driver’s name
- The other driver’s address
- The other vehicle’s registration details (take a photo of the licence plate if you can)
These details will come in handy if you need to claim on your car insurance, if the police need to investigate, or if you need to make a claim with the compulsory third party (CTP) insurer for your road injuries.
Filing a police report is a vital part of your claim after a motor vehicle accident. By making a police report, you are protecting your legal rights and entitlements.
Depending on which State or Territory you live in, you will need to lodge a claims notice with your compulsory third party (CTP/MAI) insurer. Sometimes, the police will attend the scene of the accident, but if they haven’t, you must report your motor vehicle accident to the police before you can lodge your claim.

What’s MAI Insurance?
In ACT, all vehicles are required to get MAI insurance. The purpose of MAI insurance is to provide people who’ve been injured in a road accident, which includes car accidents, motorcycle accidents, injuries on public transport and even cyclists and pedestrians, compensation so they can seek the medical treatments required for their recovery, and help cover lost wages if they’re not able to work.
