James previously served as the 28th Deputy Premier of Victoria (2014-22) and has demonstrated extensive commitment to community well-being, having portfolios in Education, Mental Health, Emergency Services, and Disability, Ageing and Carers.
James is the Independent Chair and Independent Director of Slater and Gordon, joining the board in December 2025.
He is currently the Chair of Suburban Rail Loop Authority (Victoria), Chair and Independent Director of Rest Super, and Director of Hawthorn Football Club Limited.
James holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne.
