Staying safe at public venues and events: Know your rights if you've been injured
By Slater and Gordon

The sun is starting to shine, and spring is here. It's time to enjoy the warmer months and have fun with friends.
Whether it’s watching the footy at the local pub, attending the Spring Racing Carnival, or going to a music festival, you won't be alone in seeking good times, as pubs and events will be buzzing with people. While it is an exciting time, it's important to be aware of the potential risks of injuries that can occur, especially when attending public events and venues. So, you can ensure you know your rights and stay safe while having fun.
If you have been injured in a public place, even if you were partly at fault, you may have a potential compensation claim, and you can learn more about public liability here.
Notice your surroundings and keep safe in crowds
Whether it's a major sports final or a local festival, these events and gatherings are part of many Australians' lives and can draw large, enthusiastic crowds. Venue safety and crowd management are crucial in ensuring everyone's well-being. It's important to keep an eye on crowd density, and if you feel the situation is getting too tight, you should consider leaving.
Potential assaults in public places
Sadly, alcohol can sometimes lead to anti-social behaviour and physical attacks. Research has shown that 1 in 5 assault cases is linked to alcohol (AIW). These incidents can include attacks from fellow patrons or unwarranted or excessive use of force from security personnel.
If you have experienced a physical attack or assault in a public place, we also offer free social work services for additional support while our legal team supports you throughout your claim journey.
Potential risks to keep an eye out for at pubs and rooftop bars
Enjoying a beer at the pub while cheering for your team is a tradition, but it comes with responsibilities for venue owners. All areas, including balconies and rooftop venues, must be properly maintained. Injuries can occur due to negligence, such as loose railings or poorly maintained stairs, and the injuries can range from minor scrapes to more serious issues.
Be aware of the risk of slips, falls, and tripping hazards
Did you know that 43% (AIW) of injuries in Australia are due to falls leading to hospitalisations?
Be cautious of hazards like spilled drinks, poorly placed mats, or hidden steps that can lead to slips and falls. A safe environment for patrons includes clear signage for hazards, non-slip treatments for stairs, and well-maintained walkways.
Check if you have a Public Liability claim
It doesn’t hurt to ask. Find out if you’re eligible for a public liability claim in just 3 minutes.
Keep in mind the potential injuries that can occur while traveling to the event or venue
If you're driving, using public transport, or a passenger in even an Uber or Taxi, to reach your destination, we want you to travel safely. Transport accidents are a leading cause of hospitalisations and deaths (AIW).
Injuries can result from dangerous acceleration or deceleration, collisions, faulty facilities, or slipping hazards. We recommend that you seek immediate medical attention, document your injuries and their causes, and consult medical professionals for guidance.

Remember to act quickly…time limits apply
It’s important to know that time limits apply to some types of compensation claims. It is recommended that you seek legal advice as soon as possible to ensure that you’re able to receive your potential benefits in a timely manner. Adults have three years to make a claim from the date of injury and children or people with a disability, have six years from the date of injury.
Always try to be alert whilst having fun
Being aware of your surroundings can help keep you as well as others safe, and everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy events and celebrations. We all share the responsibility of taking reasonable steps to ensure the safety of ourselves and others.
Part of enjoying your day out is keeping safe and having a great time with your friends and family.
However, if you have been injured in a public place and would like to talk to someone, get in touch today as it doesn’t hurt to ask.
