Funding boost offers new gym equipment for people with spinal cord injuries.
People living with a spinal cord injury are set to receive brand new gym equipment at the Joondalup-based Walk On program thanks to an $8,000 grant from Slater and Gordon’s Community Fund.
Walk On, operated by Spinal Cord Injury Australia (WA), is an intensive exercise therapy program that allows people with a spinal cord injury to make huge gains in function and mobility.
The individually designed program not only improves their mobility, but has a positive impact on their independence.
Senior personal injury lawyer from Slater and Gordon’s Joondalup office, Joel Schneider, said the group was one of three recipients for funding that is earmarked for not-for-profit groups across Australia.
“Walk On has a significant impact on the lives of Western Australians living with a spinal cord injury or disability, and we are so proud to support it with this new funding,” he said.
“This $8,000 grant will help the program buy specialist gym equipment for the centre, including a functional trainer and wheelchair scales.”
Head of Marketing and Fundraising, Fiona Jackson said the funding would enable people to continue to work on their mobility post-injury in a space that was specifically designed to meet their needs.
“After a Lotterywest grant to purchase the initial equipment in 2011, the program has grown more and more popular and we have now identified a need for another exercise program,” she said.
“With funding from Slater and Gordon we can now offer group conditioning programs at a lower cost than our one to one Walk On program.
“This means more people with a spinal cord injury will be able to access our program and reap the benefits.”
Slater and Gordon’s Community Fund was sourced from the firm’s Staff Giving Program, which provides employees of the firm with the opportunity to donate a portion of their wages to a fund.
The fund supports community initiatives which help people with disease or disability, promote healthy living for young people, or address inequality and the disadvantaged.
The firm also contributes money towards the fund, with organisations able to apply for a grant ranging between $2,500 and a maximum of $10,000.
