Every member of the Slater and Gordon Lawyers Ballarat office will be participating in the local leg of the Mother’s Day Classic this year to raise money for research into breast cancer.
Among the 21-strong team from the law firm will be young law clerk Tom McKinnon.
As the Ballarat event’s ambassador he will address the crowd and lead a minute’s silence in tribute to those who have lost their battle with the disease, before running 12 kilometres around Lake Wendouree.
The Ballarat local says his grandmother’s determination to beat recurring breast cancer has inspired him and other family members to sign up for the race.
“My grandmother’s resolve, as well as the resolve of several other family members who have had their own scares, is certainly a motivation for me to raise money and take part in this extremely important event,” Tom said.
My grandmother has had breast cancer at various times over the last 10 years and it also spread to her bowel. However, it has not slowed her down despite how aggressive and widespread it was.
“She lives in Cowra in NSW and is the president of the Regional Cancer Action Group in her region and has also been involved in the implementation of Breast Care Nurses and developing an oncology ward in the Cowra Hospital.”
Slater and Gordon Ballarat Practice Group Leader Fleur Jackson said she was thrilled that the entire office was taking part in the local event on Mother’s Day.
“The Mother’s Day Classic means a lot to Slater and Gordon staff, including those of us in the Ballarat office,” Ms Jackson said.
“The firm is a gold sponsor of the event for the seventh year running and will have a record 582 staff and their families taking part across Australia. It’s a great cause that is close to our hearts.”
The Ballarat event, on Sunday, 10 May is one of many similar events being held nationwide.
