VNI West is a part of the national plan that aims to establish new infrastructure required to facilitate Victoria and Australia's transition to renewable energy. The project will also establish the second link connecting Victoria's renewable projects to New South Wales' renewable infrastructure.

The project will involve the installation of new 500 kV transmission lines, which will be placed within easements designed to safeguard electricity assets and public safety. However, these transmission lines and easements will cause various disruptions to activity on the land by farmers and other land users.

The government has prioritised VNI West and has allocated $3.499 billion towards the project, expediting the construction of the transmission lines. The project will be undertaken by Transgrid and Transmission Company Victoria. While planning steps are still underway, and alternative routes are being considered, the Authority has started contacting affected landowners to negotiate access and compensation.

Project Impacts and your rights

Affected landowners may receive a request for land access or an offer to negotiate compensation.

Legal rights come from any access to your land or taking of an interest in land. The assessment of compensation must properly consider the individual circumstances of your use of the land and the disruption caused by the project. It is essential that you receive independent, expert legal advice before entering any discussions with Transgrid or other government authorities.

It is important that you seek independent, expert, legal advice about your entitlement to compensation.
