New Years celebrations

There’s nothing more exciting than ringing in the new year with your friends and family and enjoying a good party. But this New Year’s Eve, Slater and Gordon want to remind you of the steps to take if something goes wrong to derail your celebrations.

Whether you’re going out club hopping, heading into the city for a big party, or watching the fireworks from the balcony there’s plenty to be mindful of when counting down to 2023.

Crowds

Events and gatherings are an important part of life, and especially New Year’s Eve, and it is up to the venue to provide proper crowd management and safety.

Crowd density can shift in seconds, and by the time a situation starts to feel risky, the crowd already may be packed too tightly to leave. But there are some subtle danger signs, for example if the crowd is moving, then slows, that’s a sign that density is increasing.

Remember! When you start to feel confined it’s time to leave!

Balconies

Enjoying your mate’s company while you watch the fireworks from the balcony is a New Year’s Eve rite of passage. Whether they’re residential or at a club for a big night out, balconies must be properly maintained by the owner and there can be serious consequences if they are not.

If I’ve been injured I should?

  • Seek medical attention right away
  • Once removed from immediate danger begin documenting your injuries and the reason for your injury (i.e faulty equipment, poorly maintained venues, balcony rails or footpaths).
  • Seek professional advice on your next steps.

Stay safe and stay alert!

The more alert you are to your surroundings the more likely you are to be able to avoid danger.

Everyone should have the chance to go out and have a good time to ring in the new year, whether on a public or private space we have a responsibility to each other to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the people at that event.
