Blue Mountains residents whose homes were destroyed during a series of devastating bushfires in October 2013 will have their legal rights investigated by law firm Slater and Gordon.
Slater and Gordon commercial and project litigation lawyer Vincent Butcher said it was important property owners understood their legal rights to ensure appropriate compensation was received for personal and financial loss.
“We understand more than 150 homes were destroyed during the Blue Mountains bushfires, with another 100 significantly damaged – one can only imagine how difficult it has been for those families trying to recover,” Mr Butcher said.
“Whilst the actual cause of the bushfires is yet to be clearly established, it seems that most affected people will suffer loss.
“What may make this recovery process even more stressful is if their insurers do not cover all property loss – when this happens it’s very common for victims to be unaware of their legal rights.
“We will investigate whether residents have been adequately compensated for all personal and financial loss and provide legal advice to anyone who is unsure of their option.”
Mr Butcher said even though the cause of the bushfires is still to be determined, Slater and Gordon would be closely monitoring the formal enquiry.
“Regardless of who is found to be negligent, we can still provide legal representation and assistance to anyone who feels they may suffer loss,” Mr Butcher said.
“We have experience launching class actions representing people who have experienced personal and financial losses – currently we are acting for more than 60 property owners affected by the recent Margaret River bushfires in Western Australia.
“If there is a need to act in this particular circumstance, then we have the experience to do that.”
