Leading Australian law firm Slater and Gordon will celebrate the year of the snake by sponsoring Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival – the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside mainland China.

Slater and Gordon NSW General Manager Hayden Stephens said the firm had signed on as a corporate partner with the flagship festival, which draws spectators from across Sydney each year to a three-week long program of street parades, talks and special events.

“The Chinese New Year Festival is one of Sydney’s premier festival attractions and we are proud to be able to support it as a corporate partner once again,” Mr Stephens said.

“Each year the city streets fill with colour and culture, ushering in a bright new year for the people of Sydney and beyond.”

Mr Stephens said the sponsorship was part of Slater and Gordon's commitment to honouring diversity.

“We have and continue to act for many Chinese clients and have a staff member, Steve Zhang, on hand specifically to help support the Chinese community," Mr Stephens said.

“At Slater and Gordon, we want to ensure that legal services are accessible to all who need them.

“That’s why we have arranged to have our lawyers available 8-10 February at the Belmore Park during the festival markets to answer question about available legal services.

“Come down and speak to us on the day about your situation. We may be able to help.

"Slater and Gordon has a proud history of ensuring people from culturally diverse backgrounds are able to access justice and appropriate help with their legal needs.

“For example, Slater and Gordon has established a Multilingual Legal Helpline to give families access to legal information in many languages.”

The ‘We Speak Your Language’ program launched was in 2010 and is designed to better serve the needs of people from non-English speaking and culturally diverse backgrounds.

In addition, with more than 33 different languages – including both Mandarin and Cantonese - spoken by Slater and Gordon employees, people who don’t use English as a first language should feel comfortable knowing they will be able to speak to someone who understands them.

“We hope that 2013 brings good luck and good fortune to everyone and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a “Happy and safe Chinese New Year” and “Gong Hey Fat Choy!"
