Staff at Slater and Gordon Lawyers Ballarat office have a good excuse to be late for lunch with the family on Mother’s Day this year because they are taking part in a fundraising event.

Staff are taking part in the 2011 running of - or walking of - the Mother’s Day Classic, an annual event that raises money for breast cancer research.

Slater and Gordon, a national gold sponsor of the event, has staff from offices throughout Australia taking part in the classic.

Approximately 25 staff members, their family members and supporters will be taking part at the Ballarat event.

Fleur Jackson, Slater and Gordon Ballarat lawyer, said the event had come to mean a great deal to staff in the Ballarat office.

“We have been involved with the classic for a few years now, and each year the event gets bigger and we aim to raise more money for a great cause,” Ms Jackson said.

“A lot of us bring family and friends along to walk the course, and we have found it is a terrific way to spend Mother’s Day.

“Many people know somebody who has been affected by this disease. I don’t think there is a more appropriate day to do something about beating breast cancer than a day that celebrates the mothers of this world, and more broadly, women,” she said.

The Ballarat event features a six kilometre course and a twelve kilometre course for runners. Both events begin at Pipers on the Parade – the shorter distance event takes in one lap of Lake Wendouree, while the twelve kilometre run takes in two full laps of the lake.

The Mother’s Day Classic was started in 1998 and in that time has raised nearly $8 million. It is largely run by volunteers – especially in regional centres – who donate their time for this worthwhile event.

Slater and Gordon is a gold sponsor of the Mother’s Day Classic and approximately 200 staff members are taking part in the event nationwide. This year’s event takes place this Sunday, 8 May.
