Leading Motor Vehicle Accident lawyer Genevieve Henderson has supported calls for rural and regional school buses to be fitted with seat belts.
The recommendation contained in the School Bus Safety Community Advisory Committee report released this week calls for lap/sash belts for all rural and regional school student bus travel operating outside lower speed urban environment. The report calls for this to happen as soon as possible and to be completed within 10 years.
Ms Henderson, a senior lawyer with Slater and Gordon, has more than 20 years experience handling motor vehicle accident cases.
“Everyday we see the horrific consequences of people not wearing seat belts,” Ms Henderson said.
“Seat belts save lives and reduce injury – that is a fact.
“Where buses are travelling at higher speeds absolutely everything should be done to make sure they are as safe as possible. The safety of our children should always be front-of-mind.
“While school bus crash events are relatively rare, when they occur they are completely devastating.
“This is a relatively simple solution and one that should be pursued.”
Slater and Gordon has offices in rural and regional areas across NSW including Dubbo, Broken Hill, Gunnedah, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle, Wollongong, Nowra and Albury.
