National law firm Slater and Gordon is proud to congratulate Julia Gillard on becoming Australia’s first female Prime Minister.

After graduating in law from the University of Melbourne, Ms Gillard did a six-month course at the Leo Cussen Institute as an alternative to being an articled clerk.

From that course she won a two-week work experience position at Slater and Gordon and was immediately offered a full-time position. She later became a partner at the firm for four years.

Fellow partner Paul Henderson worked with her during her years at Slater and Gordon.

“Julia worked in our industrial team, assisting thousands of workers in her time with the firm, from outworkers being exploited in the clothing industry to school teachers.”

“She was always compassionate, professional and loyal.”

“Apart from her fine legal work for her clients, she is remembered fondly by staff.”

“Whenever there was a social event at her home, she didn’t just invite her lawyer colleagues but fellow workers and support staff across the board.”

"The new Prime Minister is someone who remains an inspiration to the many lawyers and particularly female lawyers who join Slater and Gordon to practise law and make a contribution to society. Today they are that much prouder of the history that she has made."

“On a personal note I remember her support personally when a terminally ill client lost her high-profile case over breast cancer. Julia offered not just legal advice but hugs and support on what was a very emotional day, following which she advised me to compose myself and get on with the task of professionally supporting my client. That was just Julia.”
