Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is a common symptom of whiplash or may occur as a result of another type of injury arising from a motor vehicle accident. A lower back injury can sometimes result in sciatica.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when pressure is put on nerves in the lower back, most commonly the sciatic nerve which runs from the lumbar spine (lower back) down both legs. For example, damage to a disc in the lower spine due to a whiplash injury can cause part of the disc to encroach on and irritate the sciatic nerve. Symptoms of sciatica include:

  • pain running from the lower back into one or both legs;
  • altered sensations, such as pins and needles, a burning sensation or numbness, in the lower back, buttocks, legs or feet;
  • weakness or reduced power in the leg or foot.

What could I be entitled to?

You may be entitled to benefits such as:

  • medical and treatment expenses
  • past and future care, for you and your family
  • compensation for being unable to work
  • if your injury is serious and permanent, you may be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering and permanent  impairment

Can I make a claim?

If you have suffered a lower back injury in a motor vehicle accident, and are experiencing ongoing lower back pain, stiffness or sciatica despite having treatment, you may be entitled to injury benefits or compensation from the Compulsory Third Party Insurer.

If you have suffered an injury you should contact Slater and Gordon either via the form on this page or by calling us for advice about making a claim.
