Slater and Gordon have been Australian leaders in class actions and groundbreaking litigation for over 20 years.
Listed below are some landmark cases from our history:
Between 1994 and 1996 some 30,000 Papua-New Guinean landowners, whose traditional lifestyle was destroyed by tailings waste from BHP's Ok Tedi mine being dumped in the Ok Tedi and Fly River systems, were represented by Slater and Gordon. The 1996 settlement with BHP included compensation to landowners and obligations with respect to tailings management. It was a landmark environmental case that established the accountability of miners operating in third world countries.
We helped win compensation for hundreds of businesses which suffered financial loss as a result of Sydney's contaminated water alerts in late 1998.
Slater and Gordon acted for investors in the failed properly development company, Westpoint in class actions brought against three financial advisor companies Professional Investment Services, Quantum and Masu Financial. After the commencement of four proceedings settlements were reached for the benefit of over 130 clients many of whom were self-funded retirees.
Money for Living Professional Negligence Claims
In 2005 over 150 Victorian retirees lost their life savings following the collapse of the Money for Living Scheme. The MFL scheme was intended to help retirees release the equity in their homes to support them in their retirements. Following the collapse of the scheme, the retirees lost the title to their properties and equity to the combined value of $20 million. A myriad of proceedings ensued including professional negligence claims against the lawyers who advised our clients prior to their entry into the scheme. A settlement process concluded in June 2007 with retirees receiving compensation for their losses.
