Slater and Gordon is committed to supporting outcomes for its clients beyond the settlement of their claims with the new Health Projects and Research Fund.

This important philanthropic fund will provide $2 million worth of grants of up to $25,000 for innovative health and research projects in Australia and the United Kingdom.

The initiatives have the potential to improve the treatment of people with asbestos-related diseases, occupation-caused cancers or who live with a significant disability as a consequence of a catastrophic injury.

Through this fund we want to help ensure our clients, and people in the community who share similar experiences, have the best possible health care and treatment.

As a law firm, this may be something we cannot directly provide, but we can offer support through funding endeavours, innovation and research by the medical and broader health profession.

I’m proud to say that the firm has recently awarded three grants to projects in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.

The Upper Limb Program of the Victorian Spinal Cord Service, Austin Health received $22,500 to fund its E-therapy program. The pilot telehealth program will deliver one-on-one occupational therapy through Skype and Facetime to patients with quadriplegia living in regional Victoria and interstate.

$22,000 was awarded to Royal Rehab in Ryde (NSW) for further work to improve the care of people with spinal cord injuries in relation to bowel care. Bowel dysfunction is a challenge for people with a spinal cord injury and can lead to health complications and poorer quality of life if not diagnosed and managed.

The Lung Institute of Western Australia will receive $21,400 in funding to understand if a person diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma can experience an improved quality of life with early specialist symptom control.

I believe this philanthropic initiative is a reflection of our firm’s values. Every lawyer of this firm strives for the fairest compensation outcomes for clients and their families, many of whom endure experiences that touch us very deeply.

Our advocacy for our clients continues beyond the settlement of their individual cases. The lives, experiences and well-being of our clients mean a great deal to us long after their cases are settled.

Thank you for your feedback.
