Shareholder Claims     Print this page

There are a number of claims that can be brought on behalf of shareholders in listed companies that have suffered losses due to a company’s misleading conduct, or its failure to disclose price-sensitive information.

Slater & Gordon has a strong expertise in the law that governs a listed company’s disclosure obligations and strongly believe that good corporate governance and the integrity of the market depends on the full and timely disclosure of accurate information about a company’s affairs.

As Australia’s largest plaintiff law firm, we are equipped to handle large and complex class actions on behalf of numerous investors that have suffered loss. As long-term pioneers of providing ordinary people with access to the justice system, we continue to look for new and innovative ways to make it economically viable for people to pursue relatively small claims.

However, our focus is not confined to large-scale claims, and we are also able to assist individual shareholders who have suffered loss, or believe that their rights are being oppressed in unlisted companies.

Case Studies

In January 2006, Slater & Gordon launched a $300 million class action against Telstra Limited in the Federal Court in NSW. The claim alleges that Telstra conducted a private government briefing on 11 August 2005, during which the Federal Cabinet was informed that the company had significantly underspent in operating and capital expenditure, resulting in deficient infrastructure. Further, that the company’s important PSTN (fixed line) business was in a significant and accelerating decline. This information was not disclosed to the market until 7 September 2005 and consequently, many investors purchased shares at an inflated value.

In January 2007, Slater & Gordon announced that is investigating a potential class action against construction and engineering company, Downer EDI Limited. For more information please click here.
