The Military Compensation and Rehabilitation Scheme
The Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Scheme (MRCS) provides Australian Defence Force personnel with rehabilitation, treatment and compensation in the unfortunate event of an injury or illness as a result of service. It also provides benefits for death as a result of service.
The MRCS came into effect on 1 July 2004 and whilst it replaces the majority of benefits provided by the Veterans’ Entitlements Act (VEA) and the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act, some benefits such as income support and treatment benefits continue to be available under the VEA.
The MRCS focuses on providing rehabilitation services to help service members who do suffer from an injury or disease as a result of their service make as full a recovery as possible. The MRCS will assist service members return to service duties or civilian work if they are able.
The MRCS increases the amount of compensation available to members and their families in the event of service-related injury, disease or death.

How will I pay for the legal fees?
Slater & Gordon pioneered the No Win - No Fee™ scheme. This means you do not pay for professional fees unless your case is successful. This scheme is generally available for military compensation claims. The scheme is designed to help those whose financial circumstances might otherwise deny them access to legal representation. You will receive a document setting out the details of the scheme after your first appointment. We are not retained as your lawyers until the document is signed and return to us.
