Former judge Michael Kirby and swimming great Lisa Curry launch Slater & Gordon family law book

Media Release

Former High Court judge the Honourable Michael Kirby and former Olympian Lisa Curry last night launched Slater & Gordon’s new family law book, “Know Where You Stand”.

Authored by Slater & Gordon National Practice Group Leader, Ian Shann, the book is full of practical tips and resources with a strong emphasis on not wasting money and avoiding stress.

The book could easily save a separating couple a wealth of time and legal fees, as well as avoiding some of the pain during this emotional time.

Michael Kirby said he wished he had the book when he was on the High Court.  “It’s actually accessible, it’s readable… this is the way you communicate ideas. The book has lots of vignettes and stories – things I never knew.”

Lisa Curry says she didn’t realise how much there was to know about family law.  “This is a fantastic book.  It’s a real eye opener.”

Ian Shann, as well as a family lawyer, has had a very personal understanding of what it is to go through a separation.

When lawyer Ian’s first marriage ended, he found himself in a world he had never imagined: adversarial, emotional and expensive

He upgraded his legal qualifications to enable him to handle his own family law case.   It was an enlightening experience, especially when the lawyer on the other side – not realising who he was – shared stories with him about the terrible person “the husband” in the case was.

The experience was so profound that, after his own case settled, Ian decided he wanted to practise family law full-time.

Today life is much happier for remarried Ian and his blended family. What he has learned as a lawyer and as a participant in the Family Court has changed his life.

Now he’s put 20 years of experience on both sides of the fence into a unique plain English guide to separation for married and de facto couples.

Last week Slater & Gordon announced an innovation in legal costs for family law cases. Under a new fixed fee model, to be introduced first in Victoria and then rolled out nationally, clients will no longer face open-ended costs on family law matters.
